about

"Improvisations" was recorded in the Dan Harpole Cistern at Fort Worden in Port Townsend, WA. I heard about this space for years, as many great recordings were made there, including Pauline Oliveros’ "Deep Listening Band." While on a residency at the fort, I made a point of checking out the cistern.
The space itself has an incredible 45-second reverb and is pitch black aside from the little bit of light that streams through one manhole entry into the 2-million-gallon underground water tank. I plugged my computer into a car battery, set up a couple microphones, and spent three days recording in the space using a variety of instruments. As soon as I played the first couple of notes, I knew my approach to making music would have to change. The unique acoustic quality of the cistern required me to slow way down and think carefully about every single sound released into the air.
On the second day I was joined by Paris Hurley, and on the third day I was joined by Morgan Henderson.
The recordings on this EP are some of the improvisations that I recorded in those three days. The reverb is natural - no extra reverb was added. These improvs and the space were the inspiration for my record "Cistern" -- an album of compositions written with this glacial movement in mind.
Thank you for listening.
Thanks to Artist Trust and Centrum for granting me access to the cistern.
